PIANO LEGEND JOHN LILL
visits Sittingbourne for the first time
Possibly the best-known pianist to come from Britain, John Lill was discovered, and his youthful genius supported, by William and Jean Lloyd Webber, the parents of Andrew and Julian. He has repaid their belief in him by a career which has carried him across the world, as a renowned piano virtuoso, possessed of formidable technique. Since winning the world-famous Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1970 – an achievement which first put his career on the map - he has played with all the world’s great orchestras and conductors, and made classic recordings of all the Beethoven and Prokofiev piano sonatas, as well as the Beethoven and Rachmaninov complete concertos.
He visits Sittingbourne for the first time, at the invitation of the Sittingbourne Music Society, in association with the Swale Festival, for which he gives the Opening Concert. His richly rewarding programme includes Mozart’s Fantasia in C minor, K475, one of his most powerful piano compositions, Beethoven’s inspiring Sonata in E flat, Op 27, No 1, and the glorious Variations on a theme of Handel by Brahms, together with popular and colourful works by Rachmaninov and Liszt.
